June 2009
Martin & Janice at 86 Priory Road took in a young rook that seemed to be an unfledged fledgling, that had fallen (or been pushed!) from a nest in one of the old trees on Priory Common. It had been wandering around Priory Road for a day or two and it's surprising a cat hadn't finished it off. It didn't look as if it was capable of feeding itself, and must have starved for the day or two it was wandering the street, but when presented with food it accepted it. Over the next day or two it started to pick up food it had dropped, finally taking food by itself from a plate, and at last starting to look for grubs itself. It wasn't ready to fly, but was starting to spread it's wings and groom itself. Through a friend it was lodged with a couple who run a company supplying birds and animals for film and TV work, who will either make it a star of the screen, or release it when it's ready.

Drawings of Priory Common wall done for WERA by Steve Amor, an architectural historian. The wall, which runs from Redston Road to just east of Park Avenue North, was built in the first decade of the twentieth century as part of the development of the estate. WERA hoped to raise funds to restore the wall but estimates suggest that the cost would be prohibitive.
